Ashley Cook AirplayExpress Artists Awards Page
Monto, born Ashley Cook, is one of the latest recording artists in the LBS stable. Growing up on his parents’ farm in Mulgildie, Central Queensland, he was influenced by the ballads of Slim Dusty and Buddy Williams. After his family moved near Biloela, Ashley began playing guitar, joined the local Country Music club, and competed in festivals. He left school at fourteen for a butcher’s apprenticeship and played with local bands before his singing career took off. In 2003 and 2004, Ashley reached the grand finals of the Australian Bush Balladeer Star Quest. He caught the attention of LBS Music producer Lindsay Butler, who invited him to record on ‘The Music Lives On,’ a tribute album to Slim Dusty. Ashley’s cover of ‘The Battle With The Roan’ received positive feedback, leading him to release his own CD, ‘Cattle Dust and Leather.’ The album features songs from notable Australian songwriters, including tracks co-written with Shaza Leigh and four covers of Slim Dusty songs. It also features a duet with his daughter, Kimberley. The title track, based on a poem by Joe Daley, helped him win the WARP Queensland Gold Medallion Award for Best New Talent in 2005.
